I have been working at the Leopold Gallery for eleven years and have been the Gallery Director for three years. After all this time, I still find the work exciting. I've gained valuable knowledge on the construction and execution of major public installations as well as what works best according to a private client's taste and space.

Artist Tyler Kimball installed more than 200 multi-colored glass spires atop a 16-foot tall stainless steel sculpture outside of the Olathe Library this week. The work, done in collaboration with Paul Dorrell, is a tribute to Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland, who died in 2020.

Some galleries have found that expanding into more corporate work has helped keep the lights on. Paul Dorrell, owner of the Kansas City, Missouri-based Leopold Gallery, claimed that 40 percent of the gallery’s annual income now comes from corporate art advising (another 40 percent comes from sales of artwork at the gallery, with the remainder being online art sales), while Andrew Witkin, co-owner of Boston’s Krakow Witkin Gallery, claimed that private advising amounts to approximately 10 percent.

The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Dallas recently opened, putting art professor, Jacob Burmood’s latest work on full display. The Kick is an abstract representation of a bicycle kick executed by Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also known as Pelé. It represents athletic excellence, as well as the global nature of the game. Clark and Dan Hunt, who own FC Dallas, commissioned the piece. They hired Paul Dorrell, founder of the Leopold Gallery, as the consultant. Dorrell had previously worked with the Hunts while creating art for the Kansas City Chiefs.

It's one of the most iconic strikes in soccer and it now stands to inspire and awe visitors to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. The Kick, a cold-cast aluminum sculpture inspired by the famous bicycle kick executed by Pelé, took it's permanent home on Wednesday afternoon as installation took place along Main Street in Frisco, outside the south end of Toyota Stadium.

For most public gardens, finding the next new exhibit is a recurring challenge that can keep the best marketing and exhibit staff up at night. Ideally, an exhibit is one that will sound enticing to the press, give members an added incentive to visit, and attract new visitors as well—all while fitting into a budget with many other demands. The exhibit should also be a good fit with the physical space of the garden and, ideally, be mission-related. Visitors have come to expect something new each year, so balancing the ongoing promotion of a garden’s plant collection and permanent exhibits with something new presents a challenge.
