Louis Copt, born January 29, 1949, in Emporia, Kansas, is a celebrated artist whose work vividly portrays the landscapes of his home state. Growing up on a farm near the Flint Hills profoundly influenced his artistic vision, instilling a deep appreciation for the region's natural beauty and seasonal rhythms. Through his art, Louie bridges past and present, melding modern Kansas imagery with early 20th century American realism to evoke a deep emotional connection to place.

After earning a B.A. in Art from Emporia State University in 1971, Louie further developed his craft at the Art Students League in New York City. There, he encountered the work of the Ashcan School and artists like Maynard Dixon, who became major influences on his evolving style.

The gritty realism and expressive brushwork of the Ashcan School resonated with Louie's desire to portray everyday life and landscapes without romanticizing them. Similarly, Maynard Dixon's Western landscapes, marked by dramatic light, bold composition, and emotional depth, left a lasting impression on Louie. Both influences can be seen in his work through his use of strong contrasts, layered textures, and an unflinching yet poetic view of the American landscape.

In 1985, Louie committed to painting full-time, focusing his attention on the Kansas prairie. He also collaborated with notable Kansas artists, including Jim Brothers, Robert Sudlow, Robert Green, Robert Brawley, and Stan Herd, futher deeping his artistic perspective.

Copt is best known for his oil paintings that depict the annual spring burn-offs in the Flint Hills, an ecological event unique to the Kansas tallgrass prairie. These scenes, filled with swirling smoke, glowing lines of fire, and shifting light, offer a dynamic view of nature's renewal. His brushstroke, use of color, and compositional choices echo the narrative realism of the Ashcan painters while paying homage to Dixon's sweeping vistas and sense of atmosphere.

The primary material Louie uses is oil and pastel. He has lived and traveled extensively in Europe, and has led groups of students on extended painting trips through France and Italy. In addition, Louie has traveled with the Kansas Geological Survey on a photographic expedition through the Grand Canyon, serving as the offical artist for the trip. But beyond painting, he explores sculpture, working bronze and glass to reinterpret Kansas structures and landscapes in new dimensions.

Louie's work has been widely exhibited throughout the Midwest and collected nationally. His work is held in both corporate and private collections around the world, including: the Kansas City Chiefs, H&R Block Headquarters, Texas A&M, Federal Home Loan Bank, the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, the Overland Park Convention Center, CrossFirst Bank, and more. In 2011, he was named Governor's Artist by the Kansas Arts Commission.
